I'm thankful that my 2 girls can already be relied on to do chores and certain tasks at home. Well, the chores I have them do are not heavy - just the simple ones like fixing the beds, setting the table for meals and fixing it after, sweeping the floor, arranging their toys and other stuff and sometimes giving their little brother a bath.
Well, I admit to kind of spoiling them before because it was mostly me who do things for them and they did not help around before. My mom was already working abroad when I was at their age, so I grew up without a mother taking care of my needs, that's why I wanted to pamper them with all the motherly love and care I could give. But, of course, they need to eventually learn to do chores and tasks.
If your'e also starting on teaching kids to do certain tasks at home or planning to do so, here are some of the things to keep in mind in teaching your children to do chores or other responsibility:
1. Guide your kids in doing tasks.
First thing I did was to guide my kids on the first few days on doing certain tasks. Kids learn best when they see how things are done and with proper guidance.
2. Chores or tasks should be appropriate for their age.
You can check out this guide for age appropriate chores for kids.
3. Show appreciation and lots of encouragement.
They may not do it right the first time, but it is important for them to know that it's just normal since they're just starting to learn how to do it. It is also very important that they feel and know that you value and appreciate their help. My usual "reward" for my kids is by giving them lots of kiss and hug with a "Thank you" and "I love you."
4. Set standards.
Kids need to learn the value of excellence in doing tasks - that they're not doing it just for the sake of doing it. A common Filipino trait we have is saying, "pwede na yan" without really trying to achieve the best in what we do. It may just be a simple chore to them but they need to learn this standard of excellence in the home because they will eventually apply this standard in everything they do and will benefit them in the long run.
5. Have fun!
Chores or tasks shouldn't be introduced to them in a way that would appeal to them as a burden. Work assignments should still have a certain level of fun for the kids. You can choose to play a fun music for them so that they'd enjoy what they're doing.

i'd be delighted if my kids can do even wash the dishes "properly" :)))

ReplyDeleteI so agree with the fun part. For kids to do boring chores, playing games is important. :) Nice tips here!
