"What is the Secret to making my kids successful?"
"How can I best teach my kids to be smarter than I am about money, so they won't go through what I went through?"
These were the words printed at the back of the "8 Simple Secrets to Raising Entrepreneurs" book that all the more attracted me to buy it, because I, too, had the very same questions in mind. As a parent, I don't want to just be able to provide my children their needs and raise them with good values, but I also want to teach them something I never learned when I was young, and that is to have an entrepreneurial mindset - things connected to having that winning and success attitude and being good in handling money.
Getting into bad debts and just relying on becoming an employee isn't something that I want my children to experience or become and so as early as now, I encourage them to become entrepreneurs when they grow up. In fact, they now have their own business selling organic products from Human Heart Nature. They put together the money they got from their godparents this Christmas and I signed up for them and got the Full Business Package, and now they're in business! My daughters are very excited that they now have a business that will help them save money and that will give them a first-hand experience to teach them all about getting into business. Of course, I'm very proud that my daughters are very entrepreneurial even at their young age.
Part of the things I'm teaching my kids, particularly to my daughters, came from this book authored by Ms. Mary Joy Canon-Abaquin, who is also a parent, an educator, entrepreneur, and Founding Directress of the Multiple Intelligence International School, that's why I'm very thankful that I came across this book. It first tackles what I believe is the most important thing every parent should know before they teach their kids anything about becoming an entrepreneur or about success and that is getting to know their interests and what they truly want. Doing something you're passionate about is one of the key ingredients to success and I truly believe that all parents should learn to help their child find their true talents and interests rather than shoving down their throats what we want them to do or to be.
The book is loaded with knowledge for the parents to impart to their children, and I would say that this is not just a helpful book for the young ones, but also something that parents could a learn a thing or two from, because I learned a lot from reading this book. A couple of things I like best in the book were that it sited successful people with tidbits of info (like their guiding principles and such) that made them successful, and it also gives the parents simple guides and helpful tips on how to further teach the concepts taught in this book to their children through the "Parentpreneur Challenge" given at almost every end of each topic. Through the activities suggested on that section, I believe it not only helps the child to learn but also helps strengthen parent-children relationships, which is really a good thing.
I'm truly blessed to have 8 Simple Secrets to Raising Entrepreneurs in my hands - a reliable parenting tool, I would say, that now gives me the confidence that I can help my children be successful in what they want to be and achieve, and to also raise them as responsible citizens that would make a positive difference in our society someday. This is a book that I highly encourage all parents out there and would-be parents to have and read.
